About this Beach

Holywell Bay Beach is a breathtaking expanse of golden sand stretching for almost a mile, backed by impressive sand dunes. Located near Newquay in North Cornwall, this unspoiled beach is one of the most photographed in the region, thanks to its distinctive twin rocks known as Gull Rocks or Carter’s Rocks jutting out of the sea. The beach offers a perfect setting for family fun, with plenty of space for sandcastle building, beach games, and picnics. Dogs are welcome year-round, making it a favourite spot for pet owners. During the summer months, lifeguards patrol the beach, providing added safety for swimmers and surfers.

The beach’s natural beauty is complemented by excellent facilities. There’s a sizeable car park nearby, and the small village of Holywell offers toilets, cafes, and shops. At low tide, the beach reveals a treasure trove of rock pools teeming with marine life, perfect for little explorers. For the more adventurous, the north end of the beach hides a cave with a fascinating rock formation creating a series of basins – believed to be the origin of the name ‘Holywell’. However, visitors should check tide times carefully before exploring, as the cave can be cut off at high tide.

Holywell Bay is a popular spot for surfing, offering consistent waves suitable for all levels of experience. The wide, gently sloping beach also makes it ideal for swimming when conditions are calm. As the sun begins to set, the beach transforms into one of Cornwall’s most magical locations, with the fading light casting long shadows across the sand and illuminating the iconic rocks. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful walk along the shore, an action-packed day of water sports, or simply a place to relax and soak in the coastal atmosphere, Holywell Bay Beach offers a quintessential Cornish beach experience that caters to all.
