About this Beach

Porthleven Beach is a picturesque stretch of sand and shingle nestled beside the iconic harbour of Porthleven in West Cornwall. This family-friendly beach offers something for everyone, with its wide expanse perfect for sandcastle building and beachcombing at low tide. The eastern end near the harbour wall provides shelter and calmer waters for swimming, while the western end attracts surfers with its more exposed waves. During summer months from early July to early September, RNLI lifeguards patrol the beach daily, providing added safety for water activities.

The beach’s dramatic setting, framed by rugged cliffs and the historic harbour, creates a captivating backdrop for walks along the shore or South West Coast Path. At low tide, rockpools emerge, teeming with marine life for little explorers to discover. Though the beach can disappear at high tide, patient visitors are rewarded when the golden sands return. Dogs are welcome year-round at the Loe Bar end of the beach, with seasonal restrictions from July to August at the town end. Visitors will find public toilets conveniently located near the harbour, as well as an array of cafes, pubs and shops just a short stroll away in the charming fishing village.

For those seeking more adventure, Porthleven Beach is renowned as one of Cornwall’s premier surf spots, drawing experienced surfers to tackle its powerful waves. However, novices should exercise caution, as the beach’s exposed position can create challenging conditions. Whether you come to ride the waves, bask in the sun, or simply soak in the atmospheric beauty of this quintessential Cornish cove, Porthleven Beach offers a memorable seaside experience. Its blend of natural splendour, rich maritime heritage, and invigorating sea air make it a treasured destination for locals and visitors alike.
