About this Beach

Porthpean Beach is a sheltered sandy cove nestled on the south coast of Cornwall, just a short distance from the town of St Austell. This picturesque beach offers crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views across St Austell Bay. Popular with families, the gently sloping beach provides safe swimming conditions and ample space for building sandcastles or playing beach games. During summer months, a seasonal dog ban is in effect from July to August between 10am and 6pm. While there’s no lifeguard cover, the calm waters make it relatively safe for swimming, though visitors should always exercise caution.

The beach’s sheltered position makes it an ideal spot for a variety of water activities. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkelling are popular pursuits, with the clear waters offering excellent visibility for exploring the marine life below. For those who prefer to stay on dry land, the surrounding cliffs provide scenic coastal walks with panoramic sea views. At low tide, adventurous beachgoers can explore the rock pools that emerge, teeming with fascinating sea creatures. The beach’s eastward-facing aspect also makes it a prime location for watching spectacular sunrises over the sea.

Facilities at Porthpean Beach include a car park located conveniently close to the beach, accessed via a gently sloping path suitable for most visitors. There are public toilets available, as well as a small café serving refreshments and light snacks during the peak season. For those looking to extend their visit, there’s a delightful woodland walk nearby, offering a change of scenery from the coastal views. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful spot for sunbathing, a safe place for family beach fun, or a base for water sports, Porthpean Beach provides a lovely slice of Cornish coastal charm.
