Polzeath Beach is one of North Cornwall’s most celebrated and lively stretches of sand, sitting in a wide, west-facing bay six miles north of Wadebridge and just a short drive from the Camel Estuary. Backed by a bustling little village of surf shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, it has a wonderfully energetic yet laid-back atmosphere that draws visitors back year after year. The beach holds Blue Flag status, a testament to its excellent water quality and outstanding facilities, which include toilets, outdoor showers, surf hire, and multiple surf schools right by the sand. Parking is available directly on the beach itself, making it one of the most accessible beaches in the region, with level access and sand wheelchairs available for those who need them.
Polzeath is rightly regarded as one of the finest surf beaches in Cornwall, its long, slow-breaking Atlantic waves making it an ideal spot for beginners and intermediate surfers, as well as bodyboarders, paddleboarders and kayakers. RNLI lifeguards patrol throughout the summer season, and the beach’s gently shelving sands make it one of the safer options along this stretch of coast, though visitors should remain mindful of occasional rips and the power of larger swells. At low tide the beach transforms into a vast golden playground, extending almost half a mile and revealing wonderful rock pools beneath the cliffs at the northern end. The South West Coast Path around Pentire Head offers spectacular clifftop walking, with sweeping views back across the bay that are hard to beat.
Dogs are welcome at Polzeath outside the peak summer season, with a ban in place between 15th May and 30th September from 10am to 6pm. In the quieter months, the wide open sands are a joy for dog walkers, and the neighbouring beaches of Greenaway and Daymer Bay offer year-round alternatives close by. Families will love the generous space and gentle conditions, and the village has everything on hand to make a full day of it. As the sun drops over the Atlantic and the surfers catch their last waves of the evening, Polzeath has a magic about it that is hard to leave behind.
“Polzeath is one of those beaches that just makes you feel alive. The surf is fantastic for all abilities, and there is always a brilliant atmosphere in the water and on the sand. The village has a great selection of places to eat and drink, and the walk around Pentire Head to the Rumps is absolutely stunning. It is one of my favourite spots on this stretch of coast.” Hayley Lawrence
