About this Beach

Fistral Beach is one of Cornwall’s most iconic and beloved stretches of sand. Located in Newquay, this wide golden beach is known as the home of British surfing. At nearly a mile long and a mile wide at low tide, Fistral offers plenty of space for families, sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts alike. The beach is backed by sand dunes and overlooks the dramatic Towan headland, creating a picturesque setting. During summer, lifeguards patrol the beach daily from April to October, providing reassurance for swimmers and surfers tackling the powerful waves.

As Cornwall’s premier surfing beach, Fistral attracts wave riders from across the globe. Its exposed position means it picks up powerful Atlantic swells, producing consistently good surf conditions. Beginners can learn in the gentler white water near shore, while experienced surfers paddle out to catch the bigger waves. Even for non-surfers, watching the skilled riders carve up the waves is an exhilarating spectacle. At low tide, kids can explore rock pools teeming with sea life at either end of the beach. The expansive golden sand is perfect for beach games, sandcastle building and long walks along the water’s edge.

Fistral Beach offers excellent facilities to cater for the crowds it attracts. There are cafes, shops and surf schools right on the beachfront, along with toilets and showers. A large car park sits just behind the beach. Dogs are welcome year-round, though restrictions apply in the summer months. When the sun starts to set, visitors gather to watch the sky turn spectacular shades of pink and orange over the sea – a magical end to a day at one of Cornwall’s most captivating beaches. Whether you’re seeking family fun, surfing thrills or just a relaxing day by the sea, Fistral Beach delivers the quintessential Cornish beach experience.
