Spring is the season when doors fling open to some fab new foodie joints across Cornwall. Here’s some of the newbies on the block, where we’ll be heading for some scram just as soon as we can.

Just a year since Herd Burger hit Newquay with its award-winning cheeseburgers, the team behind Herd have relaunched the mini golf and café on Tower Road as Rosa. Royally positioned between Fistral and town, here you can get your chops round an American-Italian menu, where steak and spaghetti sit side by side. Open daily 12-11, and bound to be great.
Okay, so the secret’s out – Got Crabs have just opened a sandwich shop in St Merryn. Which makes it much easier to track down their finger-licking crab sandwiches than when you had to chase the roving pop-up along the beaches of North Cornwall. Working directly with local day-boat fishermen and artisan bakers, it’s all as fresh as the sea breeze, and worth a pit stop on any beach adventure around St Merryn’s Seven Bays.

Foodie Falmouth is forever luring us to the south coast for platters of delights plucked from land and sea. Popping up on Custom House Quay from 8 May, is the Kelp Canteen, and we can’t wait to get over there to try the cockles, mussels and Fal Bay oysters served from this cool, vintage ice-cream truck.
Holywell Bay is one of our favourite beaches for Sunday morning dog walks in the whole of Cornwall. But, let’s be honest, the Gull Rocks bar was due a makeover. Now revamped and under new management as Holywell Beach Bar, it’s the trendy new beachside hangout, serving good coffee, hearty breakfasts and delish and food from early to late.

On the edge of the dinky fishing village of Mousehole, we’ve always loved a cocktail and bite to eat at The Old Coastguard, looking out to St Clement’s Isle. And now, in the sub-tropical garden of this chic bar and restaurant, The Crab Shack (pictured left) has recently opened its shutters, serving a casual all-day menu – from breakfast, to oysters and chips.
We’ve long been fans of the Fern Pit Café as the go-to spot for an alfresco lunch overlooking the River Gannel, before hopping on the ferry to Crantock beach (one of our many favourite things to do in Newquay). So we can’t wait to see what happens when the team from Mawgan Porth’s popular Catch restaurant take the ropes and re-open its doors on 18 May.

So this funky little artists hangout-cum-café-cum-restaurant actually opened last summer, but it slipped our radar and well and truly warrants a mention. Orange walls reflect the warm and vibrant ambience of Orange Café Bar, where writing, arts and music nights are held alongside coffee, cakes and plant-based world food that’s all served up like a colourful artworks on a plate.
