About this Beach

Widemouth Bay is a magnificent mile-and-a-half sweep of golden sand set three miles south of Bude on Cornwall’s spectacular north coast, where the land meets the full, uninterrupted force of the Atlantic Ocean. Wide, wild and wonderfully spacious, it is one of the most popular beaches in the region, yet somehow never feels overcrowded. The beach holds Blue Flag status and is exceptionally well served by facilities, with car parks, toilets, showers, cafés, a surf hire shop and surf schools right on the sand. The dramatic rocky southern end of the bay, known as Black Rock, has its own car park and café, and adds a rugged, elemental character to the setting that makes Widemouth feel unlike anywhere else on the Cornish coast.

Widemouth Bay is one of Cornwall’s finest surf beaches, its powerful, consistent Atlantic waves drawing beginners and experienced riders alike throughout the year. RNLI lifeguards patrol throughout the summer season, with designated flagged zones keeping swimmers and surfers safely separated. At low tide the beach opens up into a vast, golden playground, and the rocky fringes at both ends of the bay reveal wonderful pools teeming with marine life, including the striking formation of Black Rock itself, a lone, dramatic outcrop that dominates the southern shore. The South West Coast Path traces the clifftops above the bay, offering exhilarating walks with sweeping views in both directions along this glorious stretch of coastline.

Dogs are welcome at Widemouth Bay all year round at the Black Rock southern end of the beach, while the main northern section has a seasonal restriction in place from 15th May to 30th September between 10am and 6pm, meaning there is always a dog-friendly spot to be found whatever the season. Families will love the generous expanse of sand at low tide, ideal for sandcastles, paddling and rock pooling, while the big Atlantic skies and west-facing aspect deliver some truly breathtaking sunsets. Whether you are catching your first wave, exploring the rock pools with the children, or simply sitting back and watching the sea, Widemouth Bay has a raw, invigorating energy that stays with you long after you have left.

“Widemouth Bay holds a very special place in my heart. I spent so many childhood days here learning to surf, and the thrill of catching those big Atlantic waves never left me. The beach has a wildness and energy that is hard to find elsewhere, and returning always brings those memories flooding back. It remains one of my favourite surf beaches in Cornwall, and one I would recommend to anyone.” Elliot Walker
