About this Beach

Porthgwarra Beach is a hidden gem tucked away on Cornwall’s rugged southwestern coast. This small sandy cove is framed by dramatic cliffs and accessed via a slipway cut through the rocks. The secluded location and crystal-clear turquoise waters make it a tranquil spot for swimming and snorkelling when conditions allow. At low tide, adventurous visitors can explore the fascinating sea caves and rock pools teeming with marine life. The beach has seasonal dog restrictions from July to August between 10am and 6pm.

While there are no lifeguards on duty, Porthgwarra does have basic facilities including toilets near the car park and a small cafe serving refreshments during peak season. The cove’s sheltered position makes it popular for sea kayaking and coasteering, though the lack of sand at high tide means it’s not ideal for sunbathing. Keen walkers will appreciate the spectacular coastal path leading to nearby attractions like Porthcurno Beach and the famous Minack Theatre.

Porthgwarra gained fame as a filming location for the hit TV series Poldark, showcasing its picturesque beauty to audiences worldwide. The beach’s unspoilt nature and off-the-beaten-track feel make it a favourite among locals looking to escape the crowds. While the narrow access road and limited parking can be challenging, those who make the journey are rewarded with one of Cornwall’s most enchanting little coves – a slice of paradise for nature lovers seeking peace and seclusion by the sea.
